Lift and Shift

The LIFT & SHIFT assesses a member’s ability to safely move equipment around an emergency response or rescue location

The LIFT & SHIFT assessment is required for the following skill sets

Level 1  Level 2
General Rescue  Storm Damage
Chainsaw Operations  Land Search 3
Land Search 1  Land-based Swiftwater rescue
Land Search 2  Road Crash Rescue
USAR
Staging Area

Only members who are qualified in these skill sets or seeking to enrol in courses for the listed skill sets are required to complete this assessment.

If a member has two or more skill sets, they only need to perform the LIFT & SHIFT assessment at the highest level that is required by those skill sets.

For example, if someone has both General Rescue (Level 1) and Storm Damage (Level 2) qualifications, they only need to complete the Level 2 assessment.

Equipment

The following table provides the minimum equipment required to set up the LIFT & SHIFT assessment. Due to the number of skill sets required to complete this assessment, it is recommended that the LIFT & SHIFT assessment is set up to accommodate two members being assessed simultaneously. This ‘dual’ approach is reflected in the equipment list below.

Equipment Name  Quantity Weight Dimensions
Marker cones  11  N/A  N/A
Measuring wheel or tape measure  1  N/A  N/A
Container / crate (loaded)  2  12kg  500 (W) x 300 (D) x 300 (H)

Carry

The CARRY assesses a member’s ability to safely lift and move equipment as required for the relevant skill sets under operational conditions

The Carry assessment is required for the following skill sets

Level 1  Level 2
General Rescue  Land Search 2

Only members who are qualified in these skill sets or seeking to enrol in courses for the listed skill sets are required to complete this assessment.

If a member has two or more skill sets, they only need to perform the CARRY assessment at the highest level that is required by those skill sets.

For example, if someone has both Road Crash Rescue (Level 1) and Land Search 2 (Level 2) qualifications, they only need to complete the Level 2 assessment.

Equipment

The following table provides the minimum equipment required to set up the CARRY assessment. The equipment applies to having one member perform the assessment at a time. If you wish to have more than one member performing the assessment at any given moment, more equipment would be required.

Equipment Name  Quantity Weight Dimensions
Marker cones  2  N/A  N/A
Measuring wheel or tape measure  1  N/A  N/A
Kettlebell*  1  24 kg  250 (H)

* If you cannot source a 24-kg kettlebell, you can use a lighter kettlebell with small weights attached to it (using tape or rope) to make up the required weight. Alternatively, you can use a different 24-kg object, as long as it has a handle height similar to the kettlebell (250-275 mm) and is not so wide that it is held far away from the side of the body. Any alternative object should resemble the kettlebell in weight and dimensions as closely as possible.

Additional weight (sandbag)  1  10 kg  N/A

* The handle can be any object that can be easily attached to the rope and weighs approximately 4 kg (e.g. small dumbbell) and can easily be held at the hip during the drag.

In-Water Safety

The IN-WATER SAFETY assesses the member’s ability to safely undertake rescue activities in a water environment as required for the relevant skill sets under operational conditions. In-water

The In-water Safety assessment is required for the following skill sets

Level 1
Land-Based swift water rescue

Only members who are qualified in these skill sets or seeking to enrol in courses for the listed skill sets are required to complete this assessment.

Equipment

The following table provides the minimum equipment required to set up the IN-WATER SAFETY assessment.

The equipment applies to having one member perform the assessment at a time. If you wish to have more than one member performing the assessment (in the water, or doing the mannequin rescue) at the same time, more equipment would be required.

It should be noted that it is desirable to perform the assessment in a 50 metre pool, however, the assessment can also be conducted in a 25 metre pool.

One lane can only be used to conduct the assessment for a single member at one time.

If two or more members were to perform the assessment simultaneously, two or more lanes could be used.

Equipment Name  Quantity Weight Dimensions
Pool  1  N/A  50 metre pool is preferred. If not available, a 25 metre pool can be used
Rescue mannequin  (floating water mannequin)  1  40kg (when wet)  To represent half the weight of an adult mannequin
Approved PFD  2  N/A  One PFD required for every member that will be in the pool at any moment in time. Two PFDs allow a second member to enter the water as soon as the first member has completed their assessment.
Thin non-slip foam mat (optional)  1  N/A  If required on edge of pool

Equipment

The equipment listed in the table below (except the backpack) is sufficient to construct four obstacle lanes. Each obstacle lane includes a small and a large step, a step over, and a crawl under. This will facilitate the assessment of more than one member at a time. Importantly, all three performance levels can be assessed simultaneously.
